Overview

Clinicians still do not know how to diagnosis hypoglycemia.  The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Pediatric Endocrine Society (PES) cannot agree on the threshold for defining hypoglycemia. This educational activity will provide the learner with information on the causes of and the risk factors for hypoglycemia as well as strategies to prevent and treat hypoglycemia.

ACCME Objectives
  1. Discuss the physiology of glucose metabolism and identify the risk factors associated with neonatal hypoglycemia.
  2. Discuss the derivation of the definition of hypoglycemia.
  3. Discuss management strategies to reduce the problems associated with making a diagnosis of hypoglycemia and how best to prevent and treat hypoglycemia.

ANCC Learning Outcomes

Diagnosis and Treatment of Hypoglycemia in the Well Baby Nursery
Launch Video
NEJM Article

Following the conclusion of the live webinar originally presented on February 5, 2020, the New England Journal published an article titled “Lower versus Traditional Treatment Threshold for Neonatal Hypoglycemia.” This paper provides important information on treatment of infants at risk for developing hypoglycemia and its authors conclude: “In otherwise healthy newborns with asymptomatic moderate hypoglycemia, a lower glucose treatment threshold (36 mg per deciliter) was noninferior to a traditional threshold (47 mg per deciliter) with regard to psychomotor development at 18 months.”

We think this is an important study that begins to answer some of the questions raised following Dr. Clark’s presentation.
