Overview
Kernicterus and severe hyperbilirubinemia are two conditions that have historically not been well explored from a health disparities standpoint. Lack of awareness of the paradox between hyperbilirubinemia severity and kernicterus disparity have led to adverse health outcomes for black infants in the United States. This activity is designed to educate clinicians on the existence of the disparity and offer reasonable approaches to reducing the health disparity and improving care.

ACCME Objectives
  1. Identify biologic and non-biologic contributors to kernicterus risk in Black neonates in the United States.
  2. Describe the hyperbilirubinemia severity - kernicterus disparity paradox in Black neonates.

ANCC Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify biologic and non-biologic contributors to kernicterus risk in Black neonates in the United States.
  2. Describe the hyperbilirubinemia severity - kernicterus disparity paradox in Black neonates.
