Overview
This presentation will review recently published articles that should influence health care decisions for neonates who need intensive care: the role of human milk feedings in improving health outcomes and reducing neonatal morbidities; a recent trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of ibuprofen for closing the PDA; the role of oral valganciclovir for treatment in infants with congenital cytomegalovirus and an abnormal hearing screen; and, “How much oxygen is too much oxygen in infants born with significant perinatal distress?” At the conclusion of this activity, learners will critically evaluate the information to determine if any changes in treatment are merited and if so, initiate an evidenced-based intervention in their NICU.

ACCME Objectives
  1. Discuss the role of supplementation with human milk-based fortifier (HMBF), as compared to bovine milk-based fortifier to reduce the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis, sepsis, and mortality in extremely preterm infants exclusively fed human milk.
  2. Describe role of human milk feedings in improving health outcomes and reducing neonatal morbidities.
  3. Evaluate the safety and efficacy of ibuprofen for closing the patent ductus arteriosus.
  4. Discuss the role of oral valganciclovir for treatment in infants with congenital cytomegalovirus and an abnormal hearing screen.
  5. Examine the results of a recent clinical trial comparing eat, sleep, console approach, or usual care for neonatal opioid withdrawal.

ANCC Learning Outcomes

  3. Evaluate the safety and efficacy of ibuprofen for closing the patent ductus arteriosus.
